Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr. was born on January 6, 1982, in Tampa, Florida, United States. Gilbert Arenas Sr. (father) and Mary Francis Robinson (mother) had him.

Gilbert was raised by his grandma after his mother and father abandoned him. When they went to LA, his father had no employment and they were homeless. Gilbert had been placed in foster care by his mother.

Fortunately, his father tracked him down and placed him with his grandmother until he could settle down in California. He was thereafter raised by his father, who encouraged him to play basketball.

When Gilbert was twelve years old, he began playing basketball. He had known since then that he wanted to be a basketball player, and his father had backed him up in his decision.

He graduated from Ulysses S. Grant High School and is an Arizona University dropout in terms of schooling.

Gilbert then signed with the Washington Wizards in 2003 and spent seven years with the franchise. He was a terrific addition to the Wizards, and he had a great time with them.

During his time with the Wizards, he also received numerous trophies and accolades.

In 2010, he was moved from the Washington Wizards to the Orlando Magic. He played for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Shanghai Sharks before retiring from the NBA.

Rules of Gilbert Arenas

After the 2002–2003 season, Gilbert became a restricted free agent. He is said to have flipped a coin to decide between several teams interested in signing him, including the Wizards, Warriors, and Los Angeles Clippers.

He was offered a six-year, $60 million contract by the Washington Wizards. The Warriors were unable to match this offer since they were over the salary cap and Arenas was a second-round pick.

Due to salary cap exclusions, the Warriors would have been able to match Arenas’ offer sheet if he had been selected in the first round.

After that, the “Gilbert Arenas Rule” was introduced, allowing clubs to re-sign restricted free agents who were not selected in the first round.

Firearm incident of Gilbert Arenas

Gilbert Arenas admitted to storing unloaded firearms in his locker at Capital One Arena on December 24, 2009, and handed them over to club security. He was defying NBA rules as well as D.C. statutes, which was a major issue for the NBA.

Arenas and his Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton were also accused of firing guns in the locker area after Christmas Eve. Arenas was later charged with carrying a firearm without a license by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the US Attorney’s Office on January 14, 2010.

Arenas pleaded guilty on January 15 to carrying an unlicensed handgun outside a dwelling or business. Following the incident, the NBA suspended Arenas indefinitely without pay pending the outcome of their investigation.

Arenas apologized for his actions in an open editorial in The Washington Post on February 2, 2010.

After being found guilty on all counts, Gilbert was sentenced to two years of probation and 30 days in a halfway house on March 26, 2010. For the 2010 season, he returned to the NBA and changed his number from 0 to 9 to mark the new beginning.
