Gordon Hill’s Professional Life

Hill began his club career as a 17-year-old with Staines Town of the Athenian League after leaving Longford School in 1971. In 1972, he moved to Southall F.C., where he played a few youth games while his brother was on trial. Millwall F.C. took notice of him and signed him in 1973.

Hill, affectionately known as ‘Merlin’ by Lions fans, had an impressive skill that earned him widespread recognition. The Millwall youngster enthralled the crowd with his incredible shooting and dribbling. He scored 22 goals in 91 league games for Millwall.

Hill signed for Manchester United in November 1975 for 70,000 Euro, a deal for manager Tommy Docherty, after spending the summer of 1975 on loan with the North American Soccer League’s Chicago Sting and being named All-League.

Hill formed a wing partnership with Steve Coppell. Hill helped Manchester United reach the 1976 FA Cup Final by scoring both goals in the semi-final against Derby County at Hillsborough Stadium. Unfortunately, United was defeated by Southampton in the Final. He was also a member of the 1977 FA Cup-winning team.

Hill was sold by Dave Sexton from United to Derby County for 250,000 Euro in 1978. Hill was United’s top scorer and a fan favorite at the time of his sale. Hill signed a contract with the MISL’s Kansas City Comets in 1983. He spent one season with the Comets before being released at the end of the 1984–85 season. He signed with the Tacoma Stars in December 1984. For the 1985–86 season, he played for FC Twente in the Dutch Premier Division, appearing 19 times and scoring four goals.

He spent the summer of 1986 with HJK Helsinki in Finland, just before retiring from the game. Hill was the Nova Scotia Clippers’ managing director, head coach, and player in the team’s only year in the Canadian Soccer League in the summer of 1991, when he led the team to the playoffs.
