She decided to hold the first lesson as a counseling service in a Memphis, Tennessee, mall as a result. Additionally, the course was taught in small groups in secular and non-religious settings. In the 1990s, she started presenting the program at Bellevue Baptist Church.
The course was a 12-week course taught using Lara-themed video and audio CDs. By 1994, the course was being taught in about 600 congregations across 35 states. Similarly, by July 1996, there were about 5,000 congregations participating in the initiative. In December 1996, 8 to 10 churches in the UK held workshops. In the US, some participants also hosted meetings in their homes. 40 people were employed by Weigh Down Workshop in 1996. Franklin, Tennessee was chosen as the location for its main office.

Over 21,000 classes had been held at the workshop by August 1998, and over 250,000 people from all over the world had attended. It’s important to note that classes took place not only in North America but also in Europe and Canada. She received criticism for calling herself a Christian as well.
