The net worth of Harry Gulkin is a mystery, but he made most of his money as a movie director. He returned to Montréal after completing his service and started a career in social advocacy. Gulkin then started working for the communist weekly Canadian Tribune. He was a business manager and an art critic there.
Also he renounced communism in 1956 after the crimes of the Stalin regime in the Soviet Union came to light. He later started working for Steinberg’s supermarket chain as a marketing executive.
In 1970, the artist made the decision to become a filmmaker. Lies My Father Told Me, a 1975 drama, served as his debut feature. The movie, which was based on a story by Ted Allan, was Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated for best foreign film and best screenplay, respectively.
From 1983 to 1987, Gulkin served as the Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts’ director. In 1987, he started a 20-year career as a project manager for the Society for the Development of Cultural Enterprises.

On November 14, 1927, Harry Gulkin was born in Montreal. His parents, Raya and Peter Gulkin, were immigrants from Russia who were Jews. Before the start of World War II, Gulkin graduated from Baron Byng High School and enlisted in the merchant marines.
In the 2012 documentary Stories We Tell, it was revealed that he had an affair with Sarah Polley’s married mother, Diane Elizabeth Polley, and that she was the biological mother of the film’s director. On July 23, 2018, Gulkin, who was 91 years old, passed away.

He had been married twice. In 1950, he wed Ruth Penner, with whom he had two children: James Peter, born in 1957, and Catherine Gulkin, born in 1954. He wed Marie Murphy in 1990.
Corey Gulkin, formerly Corinna Rose, is a singer-songwriter and the granddaughter of a theatre producer. In the trailer and during the credits of his daughter Sarah Polley’s film Take This Waltz, her song “Green Mountain State” can be heard.
