Education and Childhood

McMaster was born on May 27, 1947, in Columbia, South Carolina. He is the eldest son of John Gregg and Ida Dargan (Pet) McMaster and  graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1969 and  was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the South Carolina Student Legislature as a student, according to his education. and earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973 and served on the Editorial Board of the South Carolina Law Review.
He was admitted to the Richland County Bar Association of the South Carolina Bar later that year and  was an honorably retired member of the United States Army Reserves until 1975.

Career

On May 8, 1993, McMaster was elected Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party.
He was re-elected by the State Republican Convention in 1996, 1998, and 2000 and  also served as a member of the Republican National Committee from 1993 until 2002.
The Republican Party captured the governorship, other statewide posts, and the State House of Representatives in 1994, and the powerful State Senate in 2000, all under McMaster’s leadership.
In 1996 and 2000, McMaster led South Carolina Republicans to victory in bitter presidential primaries.
On March 28, 2002, McMaster announced his resignation as party chairman in order to run for Attorney General.

During the 2020 COVID outbreak, McMaster, like most governors, proclaimed a state of emergency and closed schools and non-essential businesses across the state.
He also issued a home or work order, which is essentially the same thing as a stay-at-home order with a different name.
McMaster attracted criticism on April 20, 2020, for reopening beaches and retail outlets five days after South Carolina recorded its highest number of new positive COVID-19 testing, but his executive order did include extra social distancing restrictions.
He stated that the economy has been slowed by Coronavirus and that he expected the economy to be “humming” by June 2020.
