In 1938, he set a new record by flying around the world in three days and 19 hours. He bought TWA stock worth $7 million a year later. After that, he went on to design the Hughes XF-11 for the US Air Force.

The Hughes H-4 Hercules, also known as Spruce Goose, was designed by Hughes. The idea, however, was later shelved. After taking control of RKO Pictures, he sold it to General Tire & Rubber Company for $25 million in 1955.
