In 1977, following her great performance in Altman’s “3 Women,” she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, through which she would also get the casting position in Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece, “The Shining.” After all, though the film would eventually prove successful with the critics, Duvall did reveal to an interview with People magazine in 1981 that the grueling schedule did take a toll on her, as Kubrick would want them to perform more emotionally intense scenes.

I will never give that much again. If you want to get into pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me,” Duvall said of her experience on “The Shining.”
