Vance, born James Donald Bowman, went through some difficult times as a child; divorced parents and his mother’s drug addiction forced Vance to witness some of his life’s darkest days at a young age.

J. D. Vanceworking as a venture capitalist and philanthropist for the non-profit organization Our Ohio Renewal, James, 34, has a massive net worth thanks to his $27 cost book. Rough Childhood: Divorced Parents, Mother’s Substance Abuse Issues; Grandma Comes to the Rescue

James Bowman was born to parents Donald Bowman and Bev Vance and raised in Middletown, Ohio, in a neighborhood not known for its rich and wealthy residents. With his parents divorced when he was a toddler, James had to witness his mother’s drug addiction problems while she was married five times in the span of her life. However, in his book, James acknowledges his mother’s personal traumas at the time and does not entirely blame her for her actions. “Mom isn’t a bad guy… She paid too much attention to the wrong voice in her head. Mom, on the other hand, deserves a lot of the blame.”

During his childhood, James’s grandparents were the ones who came to his aid. After his parents struggled with their own lives, Vance’s grandmother Bonnie Vance, or Mamaw as he calls her, adopted a no-nonsense attitude while raising her grandson. In his book Hillbilly Elegy, James recalls his grandmother’s demeanor while raising him in a rough neighborhood. “Unless you have a Mamaw and Papaw to keep you on track, you might never make it out. Mamaw would kill anyone who tried to keep me away from her, which worked for us because Mamaw was a lunatic and our entire family feared her.” With such a devoted grandmother, it’s no surprise that James regards his photo with his grandmother as his only family photograph.

Despite his early childhood struggles, James is now a globally recognized figure thanks to his best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy, which is based on his childhood experiences. As a result, he may now have a different perspective on his early struggles.

Wife Restores Balance, Father Starts His Own Family of J.D. Vance

A former US Marine, James discovered the missing piece of his life’s puzzle while attending Yale Law School, where he met his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance. Though the couple has not revealed much about their personal lives, their love for each other is evident during the few interviews that the couple agrees to do.

In a May 2017 interview with NBC News, James describes the qualities in his wife that led to an unlikely pairing. “What I remember most about Usha is how completely open and comfortable she was with herself. She is extremely defensive about issues that are important to her.” The couple, who preferred to keep their marriage details private, have been quite open about their new addition to their family in the form of their son Ewan, who was born on June 4, 2017.

With their family growing, it appears that both parents are willing to make personal sacrifices for the sake of their significant other. After being offered a clerkship at the United States Supreme Court, Usha resigned after discovering she was pregnant. Similarly, James has decided to abandon his political ambitions for the time being in order to devote his full attention to his family.

In an interview with Molly Ball, James discusses the reasons for his decision not to run for his dream job in the U.S. In 2017, the Senate will convene. “You cannot sacrifice your family’s happiness in order to run for political office; if you are willing to do so, you do not belong in elected office and do not deserve your family.”
