J.J. McCarthy and Girlfriend Katya Kuropas’ Relationship Timeline
J.J McCarthy of the University of Michigan is a busy man both on and off the field. Katya Kuropas, the college athlete’s girlfriend, has been his partner for almost four years.
J.J McCarthy and Kuropas met in high school in Illinois and fell in love. The football athlete created a name for himself at Nazareth Academy before committing to Michigan in May 2019 after being considered as one of the best quarterback recruits entering his junior and senior years of high school.

He went Instagram official with Kuropas months before deciding to play with the Wolverines.
“I AM THE LUCKY ONE TO BE DATING THIS GIRL,” he said on Instagram in January 2019. “She makes me the happiest man on the planet. Thank you for being incredible every day. “Happy birthday, Katya!”
McCarthy joined at Michigan before the 2021 season and backed up starting quarterback Cade McNamara. That October, he celebrated three years with Kuropas.
“Three trips around the sun with my life partner. “I honestly don’t know where I’d be without this person in my life,” he exclaimed on Instagram. “I simply do not deserve her for the type of lady she is. One of the many qualities that make this girl so remarkable is her purity of heart and soul.”
McCarthy went on to say that religion was an important part of their relationship, saying, “I am beyond blessed and grateful to God for bringing this woman into my life, and I pray that she is by my side for years to come.”
McCarthy was designated the starter over McNamara in his second season in blue and maize.
“J.J McCarthy delivered a near-perfect performance. 11-for-12 before dropping one. That’s difficult to do in practice every day of the week,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said after J.J McCarthy led Michigan to a 56-10 victory over Hawaii in September 2022. “I think he played well. He’s doing so well that we’ll start J.J. next week. He has earned it via merit. That is based on performance and merit.”
One month later, he celebrated four years of marriage with Kuropas.
“I can’t believe it’s been four years,” he wrote. “High school sweethearts, yet I feel like I’ve known you since the playpen. I am blessed and appreciative for your love and pure heart. Together, forever, whatever life throws at us.”
McCarthy’s success on the field continued throughout the year. On Saturday, December 31, an undefeated Michigan will face Texas Christian University in the College Football Playoff.

“They believe that if a man meets the proper woman for him, he can achieve anything. “I am blessed and grateful to have found the right one for me at such a young age,” McCarthy said on Instagram. “Honored to have spent two years of my life with the woman of my dreams, and looking forward to the years ahead #730days.”

October 2022
Kuropas was on hand to watch McCarthy’s first season as Michigan’s starting quarterback as the couple marked four years together on October 8.
November 2022
Kuropas watched J.J McCarthy and the Wolverines beat Purdue to win the Big Ten Championship on December 3.
