He is the eldest of two brothers and two sisters, and the son of housewife Helen Sue (née Mansur) (1915-2014) and building contractor Henry Hurst Bruderlin (1911-2002).As a boy, he was fascinated by animals and model airplanes, which he began creating and flying when he was 10 years old.
As a teen in the mid-1950s, he was particularly taken with actor James Dean, and he began making 8 mm pictures.He met another fellow actor and classmate, Ryan O’Neal, who was around a year younger than Brolin, when his parents invited a director over to his family’s house for dinner before auditioning.
