Career

He was selected by Essendon in the 1990 AFL Draft to play for them, but due to a serious hip injury and other issues during his junior football career, he wasn’t selected until pick 79, Essendon’s eighth and one of the last picks in the draft. Due to injuries, Hird missed a significant portion of the club’s 1991 season. A vote was taken to decide whether or not to delist him at the end of the season. The majority (4-2) voted to delist Hird, but coach Kevin Sheedy decided to keep him because he thought the young Hird had a promising future. Hird ultimately remained with the team.

In 1992, against St. Kilda at Waverley Park, he made his senior debut as a late replacement for former captain Terry Daniher. Hird spent the majority of the season with the Essendon Reserves, who were led by Denis Pagan and won the championship.

There was a lot of speculation about Hird’s interest in coaching at an AFL club after he announced his retirement from sports, particularly Essendon. Hird initially refused to answer questions about his plans before declaring in August 2010 that “deep down, something tells me at some point, I want to coach Essendon.”

More

Many people were shocked by Hird’s remarks, including Matthew Lloyd, a former teammate on the premiership team, who claimed that Hird had “transformed his whole character in terms of how he answers his questions… I’d like to coach Essendon someday, but all I can say is, “I’ll coach one day.” I’ve never heard words like those before. These comments by Hird, Essendon’s “beloved son,” stoked rumors about the future of the club’s head coach Matthew Knights. After Hird made these comments, rumors started to spread that he had made an unofficial deal with the Essendon board to take the place of Matthew Knights for the 2011 AFL season.
