Riley has been a longtime contributor to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), an international daily newspaper, in addition to commenting on the news. In 1994, he started working for the Wall Street Journal as a columnist, writing about a variety of subjects including politics, race, social injustice, immigration, and more.

He was later promoted to senior editorial page writer of the Wall Street Journal in 2000. In addition, he joined the Editorial Board of the journal in 2005. Riley has frequently fought against immigration, border issues, socioeconomic injustice, and racial prejudice. He has discussed these topics in numerous speeches and publications.
