The hip-hop group City Girls was created in 2017 by Caresha Romeka Brownlee and Jatavia Shakara Johnson. As their stage identities, they chose JT and Yung Miami, respectively. JT and Yung Miami released “Fuck Dat Nigga,” their first studio tune, after joining Quality Control Media. The song “Fuck Dat Nigga” was a jab at their ex-boyfriends’ failure to meet their requirements for money.

Period debuted at No. 16 on Heatseekers Album and came in at No. 26 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 30 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of 2018. With an uncredited guest performance on Drake’s “In My Feelings” in July 2018, The City Girls gained notoriety. Their film Point Blank Period was released in August 2018. City on Lock, the second studio album by The City Girls, was made public on June 19, 2020, following an internet leak of the music. Their unreleased song “Twerkulator” went viral on the social media platform TikTok in March 2021. May 21, 2021 marked the formal release of the song.

The City Girls were nominated for Best Group and Best New Artist at the BET Awards in June 2019. The hip-hop duo also took home victories at the Variety’s Hitmakers Awards in 2021 and the BET Social Awards in 2019.

Legal Issues and Incarceration

JT faced imprisonment after releasing their popular debut song, “Fuck Dat Nigga,” on account of charges of aggravated identity theft and unauthorized credit card use. She was detained and given a 24-month federal jail term.

JT pushed delayed the date of her surrender, and on June 29, 2018, she turned herself in. The rapper entered FCI Tallahassee in July 2018 after being sentenced to prison. She was scheduled to be released on March 21, 2020.

Several celebrities expressed their anger with JT’s detention throughout his time in jail. Rapper Trina wore a T-shirt that said “Release JT” to demonstrate her support for JT. In a similar vein, Drake wrote on Instagram, “Release my shorty.”
