While estimates of Jean Boht’s wealth have fluctuated, as of 2023, a number of sources have it at approximately $16 million. This amount listed as her net worth is nothing more than she deserves, considering how hard she has worked over the years. In 1988, Jean Boht appeared in Terence Davies’ film Distant Voices, Still Lives.

In 1993, she was cast in the lead role of Brighton Belles, the British version of the hit US sitcom The Golden Girls, alongside Sheila Hancock, Wendy Craig, and Sheila Gish. The modernized Sophia from the American original, played by Estelle Getty, was performed by Jean Boht. However, the UK version did not turn out well.

Professional Career of Jean Boht:

She appeared on television as Mrs. Leivers in DH Lawrence’s 1981 Sons and Lovers adaption and as the benefits office manager in Alan Bleasdale’s ground-breaking Boys From the Blackstuff. Her casting in Carla Lane’s Bread, another sitcom about alcoholics in recovery, came about as a result of her performance in I Woke Up One Morning.

She was soon well-known across the country as the intimidating Nellie Boswell, who did her utmost to keep her big Liverpool family in line. The sitcom was a huge hit, drawing in 21 million viewers for a wedding episode in 1988, ranking it second in popularity that year only to EastEnders.

“I never watched it at the time because it’s too horrifying for actors to see themselves on screen, so I had no idea what it looked like,” she said in an interview with the Liverpool Echo in 2012.

“However, after seeing it, I’m amazed at how hilarious and excellent it was,” she added.

The Variety Club of Great Britain named Boht a BBC TV Personality in 1988, and in 1990 she was awarded the British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actress.

Golden Girls Remake

She also starred in Terence Davies’ critically praised 1988 film Distant Voices, Still Lives. She won a leading role in Brighton Belles, the 1993 British remake of The Golden Girls, alongside Sheila Hancock, Wendy Craig, and Sheila Gish.

In the original American performance, Boht played Josephine, the new personality that Estelle Getty’s Sophia had taken on. The UK adaptation, though, was a failure.

She later claimed that playing five different parts in the BBC medical serial opera Doctors was a record for the show. Also, she went on to perform on stage, including in London’s West End production of Embers in 2006 alongside Jeremy Irons.

She lived in London at Denville Hall, a care facility for actors and other entertainment industry professionals, according to a statement issued by her family.

When did She die?

At the age of 91, Jean Boht, who gained popularity as the matriarch Nellie Boswell in the 1980s sitcom Bread, departed this life. Boht also starred in the drama Boys From the Blackstuff and the comedy I Woke Up One Morning and Brighton Belles.

A month after the death of her husband, composer Carl Davis, she receives this news.

“It is with profound sadness that we must inform you that she passed away on Tuesday, September 12,” said a statement sent by Jean Boht’s family.

Boht, who was up in Bebington on the Wirral, started her acting career at the Liverpool Playhouse in the early 1960s and went on to play all across the country.
