At Division II Western Oregon, Charleston has played for three seasons. As a sophomore, he was twice chosen for the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference team. He also has the most tackles (over 69), the most sacks (4.5), free throws (4), and tackles for losses on the squad (10.5). Later, he decided to transfer, and for both academic and athletic reasons, he chose Idaho State University. Prior to sitting out the 2004 season in line with NCAA transfer regulations, he played one season of football at Idaho State. He was also selected as the Newcomer Player of the Year for the Big Sky Conference.

He was initially signed by Houston as an undrafted free agent on May 4, 2006, and later released on September 1 of the same year. Also, he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts on January 4, 2007. He participated in three of the team’s first 13 RDE games of the year, recording a total of 42 tackles, 22 solos, and two passes deflected.
