On September 9, 1956, Hammond was born Jeffrey “Jeff” Hammond in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States of America. This veteran persona is of white ethnicity and of American nationality.

Jeff attended North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and was named a High School Prep Football All-American as a cornerback in 1973-74. After graduating from high school, Hammond attended East Carolina University, where he played football for Pat Dye until 1975 when he suffered a career-ending injury.

Racing Career of Jeff Hammond

Hammond began his career as a tire changer in 1974 but later became a Jackman. He was promoted to crew chief for Darrell Waltrip at Junior Johnson Motorsports, where he won his second consecutive championship, in 1982.

The team of Hammond and Waltrip rose to the top of NASCAR’s driver-crew chief ranks, winning 43 races in the 1980s, including the Winston Cup championships in 1985.

Later, in 1991, the duo founded Waltrip Motorsports. They could, however, maintain their strong performance from the 1980s. Jeff Hammond then worked as a crew chief for Kurt Bush.
