Prior to graduating from San Carlos High School in 1977, Granholm attended Ida Price Jr. High and Del Mar High School, where she won the Miss San Carlos Excellence Expo. She appeared on The Dating Game as a young adult and worked as a local escort at Universal Studios in 1978. She then worked as an assistant at the Los Angeles Times in client and was also the only female local area expert at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City, directing boats with up to 25 passengers.

Granholm began her career as a legal assistant for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Michigan. She became a federal investigator in Detroit in 1990.
