In August 1934, Jerome was born to Bob Berry and Cora Lee Powell. He was from Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he spent the majority of his formative years.

In terms of his private life, he married Judith Ann Hawkins around the beginning of the 1960s. The two met while they were both employed by Cleveland Psychiatric Hospital. The couple welcomed their first daughter Heidi Berry into the world in 1964, followed by their second daughter Halle Berry in 1966.

Sadly, Jerome and his wife Judith divorced in 1970, just four years after the birth of their youngest daughter Halle. The specific cause of their divorce was never made public by the couple. Halle, their daughter, claims that Jerome had an alcohol problem that finally made him a violent abuser.

In a December 2021 interview with the NYPost, Halle stated,

“There’s lots of abuse in my childhood. I grew up with an alcoholic father that was very abusive, both verbally, emotionally, and physically.”

In addition, Jerome’s daughter Halle spoke openly about the abuse she and her older sister suffered in a 2009 interview with Dailymail UK. She also discussed the impact on her family of her father’s alcoholism. She stated:

“I saw my mother battered, and could not do anything to stop it. My father was tyrannical, lashing out at her for no reason. I felt the effects that had on our family – I’ve experienced what these women have gone through.”

Halle appears to have found it in her heart to forgive her father Jerome despite all the horrors she endured as a result of him. On June 16, 2019, in honor of Father’s Day, she posted a unique old photo of her deceased father on her Instagram account, @halleberry. Halle wrote a lengthy, sincere note that was posted with the photo, in which she expressed her love for her father.

“On this Father’s Day my heart is full…full of love for my DADDY! This is one of only 2 pictures I have of him, and it has become family gold! While I didn’t have much of a relationship with him while he was here, as he was alcohol addicted and that addiction robbed us of the relationship we were meant to have, I now understand how much he loved me and how vital he was and is to my life! I miss you today daddy and wherever you are, I know you’re smiling down on me because I feel your love!”
