Jerry Sloan was an American basketball great who also served as the head coach of the Utah Jazz. He was a folktale hero who was one of the best defensive guards and hard-nosed rebounders in NBA history while playing for the Chicago Bulls.

Early Life

Jerry Sloan was born in Gobbler’s Knob, Illinois, on March 28, 1942. (15 miles south of McLeansboro, Illinois).

Gerald Eugene Sloan was his birth name. Sloan’s father died when he was four years old, and he was raised by his single mother and nine older siblings.

Sloan also had a difficult childhood day because he had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to do agricultural chores. He also used to walk nearly two miles to get to school at 7 a.m. for basketball practice.

Beginning of a Career

Sloan was like a lost child who had to fend for himself all of the time. His perseverance, though, paid off in the end. He eventually rose to prominence as a star player for the Evansville Purple Aces in college basketball (1962-1965).

In 1963 and 1965, he was named Player of the Year by the Indiana Collegiate Conference (ICC), and he was a three-time first-team All-ICC pick during that time period.

Gaming Career

Jerry Sloan was noted for his unflappable defense prior to the arrival of Micheal Jordan. As a result of their first and only division title, he was dubbed “The Original Bull.”

Sloan was selected fourth overall in the 1965 NBA draft by the Baltimore Bullets. Following that, he was selected by the Chicago Bulls, an expansion team in the NBA, in 1966. Jerry Sloan retired from the game in 1976 due to a series of knee injuries.

Despite being only 6 feet 5 inches tall, he had an exceptional rebounds average of 7.4 per game, with one season having 9.1 rebounds. In 1970-71, he averaged 18 points per game, with 15 points in three previous seasons.

According to reports, the Chicago Bulls retired his number 4 jersey in 1978, making it the first retired jersey in franchise history.

Coaching Career

Sloan returned to work for Evansville after retiring in 1976, but only for five days. He was hired as a scout by the Bulls two years later, but after one season, he was promoted to assistant coach.

Jerry Sloan had a fascination for antiques, and he was continually collecting dolls and antique furniture. He wore John Deere caps all the time. Sloan also had wild drinking and smoking habits, which he eventually gave up.
