After a great undergraduate career at Lake Superior State University, Wiley signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1972, becoming the first Lakers alum to play in the National Hockey League.

He spent the most of the next two seasons with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), but he did appear in 26 games for the Penguins, earning four points.

The Vancouver Canucks picked Wiley in the 1974 NHL Intra-League Draft, although he remained a minor professional. In 1975-76, he had a two-game call-up, and his longest NHL spell came in 1976-77, when he appeared in 34 games with the Canucks and scored four goals and ten points.

He retired from the NHL after finishing his career in 1980. Wiley appeared in 62 games for the NHL. He finished with 14 points after scoring four goals, 10 assists, and eight penalty minutes.
