High School & College Career

At Fordham Prep, Holland was a McDonald’s All-American candidate, a CHSAA All-Division pick, and a Journal News All-County selection, averaging 16 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals a game.

During his time at Saint Benedict’s Prep, the athlete averaged 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 6 assists, and 2 blocks a game.

Holland was a collegiate basketball player at Boston University, where as a junior in 2009–10, he led the America East Conference in scoring with 19.2 points per game.

He went on to be named the America East Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and lead the Terriers to the NCAA Tournament.

Career in Europe

Holland was undrafted in the 2011 NBA draft. On July 5, 2011, the athlete joined with Chorale Roanne Basket of France for the 2011–12 season.

Career in the G-League

On December 23, 2015, Holland was acquired by the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League.

Later that night, in a 113–111 defeat to the Grand Rapids Drive, he made his Charge debut with 11 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.

In 37 games with the Charge, he averaged 3.1 rebounds, 16.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.2 steals in 30.2 minutes per game.

On December 9, 2016, the Canton Charge re-acquired Holland. At the end of the season, he was voted Player of the Year in the D-Impact League.

After the conclusion of the 2016-17 NBA Development League season, Holland decided to join with the Beijing Eastern Bucks of the Chinese National Basketball League. He did, however, depart Beijing without ever playing a game for them.

Finally, Journey to The NBA 

On April 11, 2016, John Holland signed with the Boston Celtics. He made his Celtics debut on April 19, coming off the bench for one minute in an 89–72 playoff defeat to the Atlanta Hawks. On August 31, 2016, the Celtics released him.

Holland signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers on September 26, 2016, but was dismissed after three preseason games on October 22.

On September 8, 2017, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed Holland to a two-way deal.

According to the terms of the deal, he will split his time between the Cavs and their G-League affiliate, the Canton Charge. Holland is the first Cavalier to sign a multi-year deal.

He would also play in his first NBA regular-season games under this deal, having previously participating in only one playoff game for Boston. Holland averaged 2.3 points per game in 24 games with the Cavaliers.

With the Cavaliers, he won the Eastern Conference championship and got to the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors, headed by all-star LeBron James, swept Cleveland. Holland was waived by the Cavs on November 9, 2018.
