John Morrison Released From WWE Contracts

On November 8, 2021, John Morrison was let go from his WWE contract as part of an eighth round of layoffs brought on by budget reductions owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this round of cuts, the WWE contracts of Morrison, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Top Dolla, Ashante “Thee” Adonis, Tegan Nox, Drake Maverick, Shane Thorne, and Jaxson Ryker were all terminated. They successfully defended the titles against the Legion of Doom, The Mexicools, William Regal, and Paul Burchill on the “SmackDown!” program from October 28th, but they lost them to Rey Mysterio and Batista on the episode from December 16th, two days before Armageddon. Then, John Cena, the WWE Champion, defeated Nitro and Melina in their Raw debut match. Nitro then held the championship for four months, engaging in a number of rivalries, before losing it to Jeff Hardy on the second edition of “Raw” in October. Hennigan later joined with the new television program Lucha Underground on the El Rey network, where he competed as Johnny Mundo. This was announced in September 2014.

On the 26th edition of “Lucha Underground,” Mundo defeated Sexy Star to win the Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Championship after knocking Sexy Star out with brass knuckles while the referee was distracted. Mundo successfully defended his belt against Sexy Star in a rematch on the Lucha Underground program airing on December 21 inside a steel cage. Prince Puma defeated him for the championship at “Ultima Lucha Tres.” On November 17, 2018, Mundo competed in professional wrestling and defeated Matanza Cueto in a Sacrifice to the Gods match on the last Lucha Underground show, Ultima Lucha Cuatro. Following the Miz’s injury at WrestleMania Backlash, John would commence his singles reign by defeating Jeff Hardy on the “Raw” broadcast of June 14th.
