John Seigenthaler was born on July 27, 1927, in Nashville, Tennessee, as John Lawrence Seigenthaler. He was the eldest son of John and Mary (Brew) Seigenthaler, who had eight children. Much about his parents is not shared with the public. From 1946 to 1949, he attended Father Ryan High School and served in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of sergeant. He also participated at the American Press Institute for Reporters at Columbia University.

Seigenthaler was also founding editorial director of USA Today from 1982 to 1991. John is the lone writer of three books published to date. John released his debut book in 1971 under the heading, A Search for Justice. Then in 1974, another book, The Year of the Scandal Called Watergate.

For his contribution to American Journalism, John garnered multiple national and international prizes. In 1996, Seigenthaler received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award as well as an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Colby College.
