She attended Syracuse University on a scholarship and graduated valedictorian in 1960. In 1961, she married English student Raymond Smith and got her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. Oates began teaching at the University of Detroit and went on to the University of Windsor in Canada towards the end of the decade. She and her husband went on to serve as co-editors of the literary quarterly The Ontario Review, and by the late 1970s, Oates had accepted a teaching position at Princeton University.
