Gilberto Guerra and Olga Seijas gave birth to Juan Luis Guerra on June 7, 1957. He is from the Dominican Republic and has a Caucasian background. They are his two brothers, Diego Esteban Guerra Seijas and Jose Gilberto Guerra Seijas.
Juan Guerra went to the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo to study literature and philosophy. Later, he learned music theory and how to play the guitar at Santo Domingo’s EL Conservatorio Nacional de Musica. Berklee College of Music in Boston is where Guerra went after he graduated from Conservatorio. There, he earned a diploma from the school in 1982 in jazz composition.

Guerra planned a concert on April 18, 2010 to raise funds for Haiti’s earthquake victims. Following the event’s success, Guerra established a children’s hospital in Haiti.
