On September 9, 1930, Frank Lucas was born in La Grange, North Carolina, to Fred and Mahalee Lucas. (Jones, nee) He had a difficult childhood in Greensboro, California, and witnessed a number of tragic events during his adolescence.
His 12-year-old cousin was assassinated by Ku Klux Klan members because his relative had his eye on a Caucasian woman in the town where they lived. This altered his outlook on life, and he began committing minor offenses until he relocated to New York City and began working for Bumpy Johnson.

A Criminal’s Life

Though some of his stories have been debunked, Frank did not take control of his own life until after Bumpy Johnson died. Initially, he simply traveled across the United States in search of work. He was well aware that the Italian Mafia had a monopoly in New York and that he needed to break it somehow.
He traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, where he met former US Army sergeant Leslie ‘Ike’ Atkinson at Jack’s American Star Bar, a soldier hangout, who assisted him in smuggling drugs into the US after Frank made contacts with Southeast Asia dealers and began trafficking drugs into the US – some sources say he used caskets of deceased US Army soldiers.

Arrest, incarceration, and death

The US Drug Enforcement Administration and other New York Police Department detectives raided Frank and Julianna’s home in Teaneck, New Jersey, USA, in January 1975, and discovered over $500,000 in cash. He was arrested and sentenced to 70 years in prison. However, because he agreed to a plea bargain and turned up information that led to more than 100 other drug-related convictions, he only served five years and was released in 1981.
Frank was back to his old tricks only three years later. When he was apprehended attempting to exchange an ounce of heroin and $13,000 for one kilogram of cocaine. He was sentenced to seven years in prison this time. In 2007, he rose to prominence as the subject of the film
