Kapil debuted domestically against Punjab in November 1975.

Six wickets helped Haryana win by reducing the opposition to 63 runs. In one 1976-77 encounter against Jammu & Kashmir, he took 8 wickets and scored 36 runs. He went 7/20 against Bengal that year.

He also took his first 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket against Services in 1978-79. His remarkable performance earned him selection for the Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Wills Trophy.

He demonstrated his versatility with the ball and bat. He scored 193 runs against Delhi in 1979-80, his first century.

International career
