Karin got acquainted with skiing at a young age and went on to become a ski coach and athlete. When she was in school, she won a gold medal at the annual Winter Olympics of her residential school in Hokkaido, Japan.

She moved to the north of the country when she was a senior in high school. She then began acting in order to gain certifications from the Northwest Technical Team and PSIA. Karin disclosed on Facebook that the University of Washington awarded her a bachelor’s degree in cell/cellular and molecular biology. She graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a diploma in winemaking.

Karin made the announcement in March 2023 that she would start coaching Mikaela Shiffrin after leaving her post as the national director for Alpine Canada Women. She is only the second female Chief Director in history and the only one in the World Cup series.
