In 1995, Kate published her debut novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum. The novel defeated Salman Rushdie’s The Moor’s Last Sigh as well as Roy Jenkins’ biography Gladstone to win her Whitbread Book of the Year Award. Ruby Lennox narrates the novel, which takes place in Yorkshire.
The book was also made into a radio, television, and stage adaptation. Two years later, in 1997, Kate Atkinson’s second novel, Human Croquet, was published. In 2000, she released her third book, Emotionally Weird. She published Not the End of the World, a collection of short stories, in 2002. In addition to novels, Atkinson has written two plays, Nice and Abandonment, for the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. In August of 2000, the story was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival.
