At the age of ten, she competed in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships in London and placed second in the 500 meters with a personal best of 1:34.28. She also finished seventh overall. After winning a one-mile cross country race, she made history by becoming the first Leigh Harriers girl to win the individual under-11 title in both the South East Lancashire League and the Red Rose League. As a first-year U13, she won the titles of Greater Manchester champion in the 800 and 1200 meters on the track. On a 2.75 km cross country course, she also won her third Greater Manchester title. Later, she successfully defended both of her track titles.

At the age of 14, she placed third in the 800m under-15 events both at the England Championships and the ESAA English Schools’ Championships. She competed in the U17 800m races and finished fourth in the ESAA Championships in 2017. She won her first gold medal at the England Championships and recorded a personal best time of 2:06.85. In June 2018, she won the under-20 England title in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.41. She also took home the gold medal at the European U18 Championships in Gyor. With a competition record time of 2:04.89 in August at the UK School Games, Keely added championships there as well. She recorded a new personal best time of 2:03.40 when finishing second at the England under-20s and taking bronze at the U20 Europeans in Boras, Sweden. On February 1, 2020, she also won the Vienna Indoor Track & Field competition in a performance that set a new European U20 800m indoor record of 2:01.16. She later won her first national championship at the British Indoor Championships. With an outdoor personal best time of 2:02.85, she won two BMC gold standard races in Trafford and only lost to Raevyn Rogers, the 2019 world silver medalist. She broke the first British women’s under-20 world record in 36 years when she began the 2021 season. She also won the European Athletics Indoor Championships as the youngest British competitor.

At the Golden Spike in Ostrava in May 2021, she won her first significant international outdoor race and ran her first outdoor sub-2 minute mile in 1:58.89. At the Nationals, which served as the Olympic trials at the end of June, Keely successfully defended her British title, earning a seat on the ship to Tokyo. When she placed fourth at the Diamond League competition in Stockholm, she lowered her personal best time to 1:57.51, breaking the British U23 record.  At the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games in August, she took home silver behind Athing Mu and smashed Kelly Holmes’ 26-year-old British record of 1:56.21 as well as the 1978 European U20 record of 1:57.45.

She finished second in Brussels in 1:58.16, fifth at the USA’s Prefontaine Classic in 1:58.30, and won the Cliff Temple Award for British Female Athlete of the Year from the British Athletics Writers’ Association in 1:57.98 in Zurich to cap off the season. Additionally, She didn’t receive financing from UK Athletics until at least the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, and it was revealed in October 2021 that she had received funding for the Olympic podium program. She then began her indoor season on February 19 by competing in the 800 meters and winning easily in 1:57.20 to break the British record.

Going into the World Indoor Championships Belgrade 22 in March 2022, she was a solid favorite to win the gold medal. She also began her summer campaign on May 21 in the Birmingham Diamond League, winning her specialty tournament as well as the Eugene DL, Oslo DL, and Stockholm DL. Mary Moraa was her rival in Stockholm. Keely finished second to Mu (1:56.30) at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she also took home the silver medal. Moraa finished third in 1:56.71, a personal best.
