Northern Illinois

According to NCAA transfer regulations, Northern Illinois Golladay had to sit out a season after transferring in 2014. He caught 73 passes for 1,129 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2015 as a junior. In 2016, his final collegiate season, he recorded 87 catches for 1,156 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight receptions.

Professional career

On December 23, 2016, it was revealed that Kenny had accepted his invitation to participate in the 2017 East-West Shrine Game but was unable to do so due to an elbow injury he had sustained during Senior Bowl practice. 58 wide receivers from colleges attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, including him. He had a disappointing performance, placing 26th in the three-cone drill and 20th overall among wide receivers in the 40-yard dash.

Detroit Lions

On June 19, 2017, the Detroit Lions agreed to a four-year, $3.19 million contract with Kenny that also included a $718,824 signing bonus. Then, he played in his first NFL game during the Detroit Lions’ 24-10 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts, catching three catches for 53 receiving yards and two touchdowns. On a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Rudock in the first quarter, he scored his first preseason touchdown. Golladay was ranked third among wide receivers on the depth chart by head coach Jim Caldwell. In the Detroit Lions’ 35-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Golladay made his professional regular-season debut.

He had four receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns. In the fourth quarter, Matthew Stafford completed a 10-yard throw to him for his first career touchdown. With 70 receptions for 1,063 yards and five touchdowns, he ended the season as the Lions’ top receiver. In Week 2 of 2019 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Golladay caught eight catches for 117 yards and a score as the Lions won 13-10; but, in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Golladay grabbed five passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns in the 34-30 defeat. Golladay caught five passes for 121 yards in Week 6’s 23-22 defeat to the Green Bay Packers and six passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns in Week 8’s 31-26 victory over the New York Giants.

Similar to this, Golladay caught four passes for a season-high 132 yards and a touchdown in Week 9’s 31-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Only four receptions were made by him, but they resulted in 158 receiving yards, including a 75-yard touchdown in Week 13’s Thanksgiving Series matchup with the Chicago Bears. He ended the 2019 season with 65 receptions for 1,190 receiving yards and a league-high 11 receiving touchdowns, earning him a selection to his first Pro Bowl.

Kenny was also inactivated by the Lions on July 29, 2020, and then placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Due to a hamstring injury, he missed the first two games. He returned in Week 3’s 26-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, catching six catches for 57 yards and his first receiving score of the year. He caught four passes for a total of 105 receiving yards in the 34-16 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguar in Week 6.
