Career Disruption in College

When Kenny applied for collegiate years after his high school career, the NCAA confronted him about an academic transgression. On the eve of his enrollment in New Mexico, the NCAA ruled Thomas ineligible in August 1995.

They claimed that the only reason was that Kenny was only one high school core credit short of the needed 13 credits.

When the NCAA stated that his physical science subject was not part of a core curriculum, the issue arose. Kenny did say, however, that he accepted the class on the advice of his counselor and that if the NCAA had notified him beforehand, he would have altered his mind.

As a result, Thomas took the matter to court, claiming that the NCAA’s decision was harming Kenny’s education irreparably. After three hard days, they finally accepted Kenny as a program participant.

The Professional Arena

Kenny Thomas entered the NBA Draft shortly after graduating from college in 1999. Back then, he was selected with the 22nd overall pick in the first round by the Houston Rockets.

He was a three-year member of the squad, consistently leading the team in rebounding and blocked shots. Kenny was moved by the Rockets to the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2002-03 season.
