The deal cost €10 million, and Boateng’s four-year contract was set to end in June 2017. He then made his Schalke 04 debut in a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. On September 28, 2020, he signed a one-year contract to play for Monza, a newly promoted Serie B team. In 2021, he returned to Hertha BSC on June 23. For the international match against the Republic of Ireland in Cork in February 2009, new coach Horst Hrubesch called up Boateng to the Germany U21 team.
