Career as a Player

Kevin began his football career with his brothers, playing for the Booval Swifts. Then he joined the Norths club in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership.

But, in 1987, he joined his brother Steve at the Canberra Raiders of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership. As a 19-year-old reserve in the club’s first grand final in 1987, he was a reserve.

Kevin made his Queensland Maroons debut as a reserve in Game III of the 1989 State of Origin series. Later that year, while playing from the bench for the Canberra Raiders in the 1989 Grand Final, he experienced his first taste of premiership success.

Kevin and his twin signed with the Brisbane Broncos in 1990. He was named Broncos Player of the Year in 1990 almost immediately after joining the club.

Team Queensland went on to win the first game of the series, but they were humiliated in the second game, losing 38–6. The second game was held at Optus Stadium.
