Kirk went on to direct the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention. Kirk co-founded The Humble Hearts, a gospel group that recorded one of Franklin’s compositions, and caught the ear of gospel music legend Milton Bingham, musical director of the Georgia Mass Choir. Bingham hired Kirk as the lead for the DFW Mass Choir in a recording of Franklin’s song “Every Day with Jesus.”
In 1992, Franklin founded “The Family,” a seventeen-voice choir composed of neighbors and close friends. The same year, Vicki Mack-Lataillade, the co-founder of budding record company GospoCentric, inked Kirk & The Family to a recording deal. The group issued an album with the same name in 1993. The 1995 album Kirk Franklin & the Family Christmas was released.
