Kirk Franklin was born on January 26, 1970, and is 52 years old as of 2022.  After his mother abandoned him and he was raised by his aunt Gertrude, Kirk Dewayne Franklin had a challenging childhood. However, his aunt soon discovered that he had a musical ear, and before he turned five, he started working odd jobs like recycling aluminum cans to pay for piano lessons. By the time Kirk was seven years old, he was already receiving offers and contracts for his music, but his aunt insisted that he join the church choir.

Therefore, he assumed leadership of the adult choir at Mt. Rose Baptist Church when he was eleven years old. But with his newfound celebrity came some reckless behavior, and he became a father at the age of fifteen. This incident drove him away from his church devotion and resulted in behavioral changes that led to his expulsion from school. It took a couple of years and the tragic murder of a friend for him to return to church and choir singing.

Kirk Franklin studied music with Jewell Kelly and the Singing Chaparrals while attending Oscar Dean Wyatt High School. Following this formal instruction, he was appointed as the church choir’s official pianist.

Kirk went on to direct the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention. Kirk co-founded The Humble Hearts, a gospel group that recorded one of Franklin’s compositions, and caught the ear of gospel music legend Milton Bingham, musical director of the Georgia Mass Choir. Bingham hired Kirk as the lead for the DFW Mass Choir in a recording of Franklin’s song “Every Day with Jesus.”

In 1992, Franklin founded “The Family,” a seventeen-voice choir composed of neighbors and close friends. The same year, Vicki Mack-Lataillade, the co-founder of budding record company GospoCentric, inked Kirk & The Family to a recording deal. The group issued an album with the same name in 1993. The 1995 album Kirk Franklin & the Family Christmas was released.

A year later, Whatcha Lookin’4 was made available. Whitney Houston and the Georgia Mass Choir recorded Franklin’s song Joy. Unfortunately, Linda, the founder of God’s Property, sued Franklin in the late 1990s. After being released in 1998, The Nu Nation Project spent 49 weeks at the top of the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and 23 weeks at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Christian Albums chart. Franklin received his third Grammy for it as well.

However, The Family members sued Franklin and GospoCentric Records for unpaid royalties for the Nu Nation Project in 2000, suing them for millions of dollars. The trio disintegrated shortly after, and Franklin went solo. The music for the movie Kingdom Come was written by Franklin.

Released in 2002, The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin spent 29 weeks at the top of the Gospel Albums chart, peaked at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and was awarded Platinum certification. Back-to-back hits in the 2000s included Looking for You, Imagine Me, the album Hero, and the album The Fight of My Life.

In cooperation with RCA Records, Franklin founded his own record label imprint, Fo Yo Soul Recordings, in 2013. Losing My Religion was released in 2015. “Love Theory,” the lead single from his album Long Live Love, was made public in January 2019. He is the host of the Sunday Best program, which has been back on air for the first time in four years.

In addition to spending two years on the R&B charts and the Gospel music charts, Kirk Franklin & The Family eventually achieved platinum sales status. For 42 weeks, it occupied the top slot on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Additionally, it was the first gospel album to achieve a million sales. Whatcha Lookin’4 earned Franklin his first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album and went platinum twice.

The first single, “Stomp,” featuring Cheryl “Salt” James (of Salt-N-Pepa), stayed at the top of the R&B Singles Airplay chart for two weeks and even made it into the Top 40. For Hero, Franklin received two Grammy Awards in December 2006. In 2007, Hero was additionally named the Stellar Awards CD of the Year. In its first week, The Fight of My Life sold 74,000 copies. Franklin has received 12 Grammy Awards, as well as GMA Dove Awards, BET Awards, Soul Train Awards, and Stellar Awards.
