He enrolled in its cosmetology school and worked as a colorist at the Arrojo Studio in New York after finishing top in his class. He began his career as a makeover artist on the shows What Not to Wear and While You Were Out. An Arrojo client told him about a casting call for a makeover show in 2002.

Kyan sent the producers a photo of himself and a short bio he’d written. He was invited in for a tryout, and he was quickly promoted to Grooming Guru for the show. As a member of Queer Eye, Kyan appeared on soundtrack CD and DVD events, as well as magazine covers and chat shows. Kyan is an L’Oréal spokesperson and product, as well as the creator of Beautified. He was requested to speak at his alma mater, Loyola University New Orleans, once again in 2004. He took over as presenter of TLC’s Ten Years Younger in 2009. (beginning with the fourth season).
