He played football and baseball at St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was picked in the 23rd round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox, but he did not sign with them. In 2008, he was named to the US Army All-American Bowl.

Career in College

He committed to Florida State University after graduating from high school. Long, on the other hand, departed Florida State for academic reasons in January 2009, following a DWI offense. In 2010, he enrolled at Saddleback College. He started his first year at Saddleback as a defensive end, but shifted to the offensive line the next year. He subsequently went on to play football at the University of Oregon.
