Sprewell’s attack on Warriors head coach P. J. Carlesimo during a practice in Oakland on December 1, 1997, left a lasting stain on his resume. Carlesimo Sprewell threatened to kill him and dragged him backward by his throat until his teammates and assistant coaches pulled him off. After showering and dressing and again accosted Carlesimo Sprewell returned around 20 minutes later. He struck Carlesimo’s right cheek briefly before the other coaches drew him away once more.

Sprewell was also given a ten-game, no-pay suspension. Following a public outcry, the Warriors invalidated the remaining three years and $23.7 million of his contract the following day. Sprewell was charged with reckless driving for his part in a 90 mph accident that injured two persons. He was placed under house arrest for three months as part of a no-contest plea.

Due to the NBA lockout, Sprewell did not resume playing until February 1999, when the New York Knicks acquired him in a trade with the Warriors for Chris Mills, John Starks, and Terry Cummings. With Sprewell, Ewing, and shooting guard Allan Houston in the starting lineup for the 1999–2000 season, the Knicks went 50–32, which earned them the third seed in the Eastern Conference. Sprewell took over as the Knicks’ leader in 2000–01 after Ewing was moved to the Seattle Super Sonics, posting 17.7 points and made his lone All-Star appearance that season. Before the 2002–03 season, Sprewell reported to training camp with a fractured hand.
