Lennie James’s Childhood and Education

Lennie James was born on October 11, 1965, in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, to Afro-Trinidadian parents. His mother, Phyllis Mary James, died when he was only ten years old. Following her death, he and his brother Kester James chose to stay in a children’s home rather than travel to the United States to live with a relative.

James was in foster care for eight years. He is of mixed ethnicity and has British nationality. Ernest Bevin College is where the actor earned his bachelor’s degree. During his adolescence, he aspired to be a professional rugby player.

James continued his education at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1988. He also assisted in running a campaign against the school’s initiative to rusticate another student at the time. In relation to the incident, James stated in 2015, “That entailed being hauled in front of the head and threatening to boycott a big event for the Lord Mayor, despite the fact that the head said it would mean I’d be thrown out,” The actor used to work for the British government’s social security office.

Lennie James made his professional debut as Baptist in the 1991 television series The Orchid House. His other previous television roles include DC. For a year (1995-96), he played DC Bruce Hannaford in 12 episodes of Out of the Blue.

Lennie James made his film debut as Jeb Walker in the 1988 American science-fiction adventure film Lost in Space, co-starring Gray Oldman, William Hurt, and Heather Graham. Following his appearance in the crime comedy film Snatch, he had a major breakthrough. The film was a commercial success, grossing $83.6 million at the box office against a production budget of $10 million.

Outlaw, The Next Three Days, Lockout, Swelter, and Get on Up are among his other notable works. In 2017, he appeared in Double Play and Blade Runner 2049.

As a mentor, he also works with black inner-city kids. In addition, when discussing his work with black inner-city children, he stated

“Boys and men in our community need to be aware of the guy who gets up every morning and goes to a job he doesn’t necessarily enjoy in order to provide for his family.” They are the heroes my community should recognize.”
 

Personal Life of Lennie James

Lennie James has been married to his girlfriend Giselle Glasman for a long time, and the couple has three daughters. In 1990, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Romy James. In 1994, they welcomed twins Celine and Georgia James. The twins are currently enrolled in Ivy League universities.

For The Big Issue magazine, James wrote a letter titled “letter to my younger self.” In a letter written in March 2015, he expressed his grief over the loss of his mother at such a young age. “It slammed into me quite hard. It was just the three of us: my brother, my mother, and me. When the terrible thing happened, everything changed. It had a profound and life-changing impact on me. One regret is that I never met my mother as an adult.”
