Leslie Uggams was born in New York City, New York, on May 25, 1943, to Juanita Ernestine, a Cotton Club chorus girl/dancer, and Harold Coyden Uggams, an elevator operator. She is of American nationality and of Black ethnicity/race. Her parents reared her in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
Uggams graduated from New York’s Professional Children’s School. Her parents inspired her to seek a profession in performing at a young age.
