Age and early years:
Lolo Soetoro was born on January 2, 1935, in Bandoeng, West Java, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) as Soetoro Martodihardjo, also known as “Lolo” in Javanese. His father, Martodihardjo, worked for a Yogyakarta mining office.
He was the eighth of his parents’ ten children. His father and older brother were killed when Dutch soldiers set fire to their house during the Indonesian National Revolution. Lolo and his mother escaped to the countryside.
Soetoro holds a bachelor’s degree in geography from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. Following graduation, he began working as a civilian for the Indonesian Army Topographic Service.
In 1962, the Indonesian Army Topographic Service offered him a scholarship to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to pursue graduate studies in geography. Obama’s wedding to Dunham gave him a stepfather at three. Their daughter, Maya Kasandra Soetoro, was born August 15, 1970.
After a year of marriage, he moved to work in Indonesia, leaving Dunham and Obama to live at her parents’ Honolulu house while she finished school. Dunham moved to Jakarta with Soetoro and their six-year-old son after earning her anthropology degree in 1967.
Dinas Topografi, an Indonesian army-hired mapping and surveying agency, employed Soetoro until 1970. His finances increased after joining Union Oil Company for government connections.
The family lived in a new Menteng Dalam neighborhood for 2.5 years and owned a property in South Jakarta’s Tebet subdistrict’s administrative hamlet.
