He was originally more interested in basketball and soccer, but in high school, he switched to football after being motivated by his cousin, CFL receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux.
During his time at Harry Ainlay High School, Lwal was a defensive lineman who was a great performer who helped the squad win two provincial titles.

He received multiple scholarship offers from NCAA Division I schools during his time in high school and college, but in the end, he decided to attend the University of Connecticut, where he played for the Huskies from 2018 to 2021.
