The Sudoku puzzle first featured in the original Nikoli publications. In 1984, he stumbled across the puzzle under the heading “Number Place,” and it piqued his interest. He came up with the moniker “Sudoku” while making his hasty way to the horse races. He simplified Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru (“numbers should be single”) on the advise of his peers. When the game was introduced in Britain and the United States, it quickly became quite popular.
Kaji has also developed or made popular a variety of other puzzle games, such as Masyu. He gave notice of his resignation as Nikoli’s leader on July 31, 2021, ten days before he passed away. Following him as president was the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Yoshinao Anpuku.
