Saint Denis went on to found the London Theatre Studio (1936–1939), a groundbreaking new theatre school that included Motleys-taught theatre design courses. Jocelyn Herbert was one of their pupils, and it was the first time theatre design had been taught in a drama school in the UK. In 1936, the Motleys opened a couture house in addition to their teaching and theater work.

Margaret Harris and Elizabeth Montgomery traveled to the United States at the start of World War II to plan a production of Romeo and Juliet for Laurence Olivier. They remained in America until the war’s end, designing several famous Broadway productions.
