The first full-scale production on which they collaborated was John Gielgud’s directorial debut, Romeo and Juliet, for the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS). Because of this, Gielgud was asked to design Gordon Daviot’s Richard of Bordeaux, which premiered in February 1933 at the New Theatre in St Martins Lane, London. The production was a big hit, and audiences lined up around the block every night to see it. It is widely acknowledged that the success was due in part to the Motley sets and costumes, which were praised for their charm and lightness and captured the spirit of the time in an imaginative rather than slavishly historical sense. They became Gielgud’s frequent collaborators during a busy and highly profitable decade during which they worked on such productions as his celebrated Romeo and Juliet (1935), in which he alternated the parts of Romeo and Mercutio with Laurence Olivier, and his Hamlet of 1936. They also collaborated with Michel Saint-Denis, the celebrated French director, on André Obey’s Noah, starring John Gielgud in the title role, which they designed in 1935. Saint Denis went on to found the London Theatre Studio (1936–1939), a groundbreaking new theatre school that included Motleys-taught theatre design courses. Jocelyn Herbert was one of their pupils, and it was the first time theatre design had been taught in a drama school in the UK. In 1936, the Motleys opened a couture house in addition to their teaching and theater work.

Margaret Harris and Elizabeth Montgomery traveled to the United States at the start of World War II to plan a production of Romeo and Juliet for Laurence Olivier. They remained in America until the war’s end, designing several famous Broadway productions. Margaret Harris also collaborated with Charles Eames on his moulded plywood aeroplane pieces for a period.
