Who is Andy Garcia?

Andrés Arturo Garca Menéndez, a Cuban-American filmmaker and actor, was born on April 12, 1956, in Havana, Cuba, to a Catholic family. René Garca Nez, his father, was an attorney and avocado farmer in Cuba before moving to the United States and starting a fragrance company. Amelie Menéndez, his mother, was an English teacher. Tessi, Andy’s older sister, and René, Andy’s older brother, are his siblings.

Andy’s family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was five years old, following the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs Invasion. René founded his multimillion-dollar perfume enterprise in Miami.

While attending Miami Beach Senior High School, Andy was a member of the basketball team. He contracted mononucleosis during his final year of high school, which prompted him to pursue a career in acting. During his senior year, he took theatrical lessons with Jay W. Jensen. Andy attended and graduated from Florida International University after enrollment.

In 1983, he starred as Ricardo in the film “Guaguasi,” and later rose to prominence after playing Vincent Mancini, Sonny Corleone’s thug son, in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather III” in 1990. Andy’s decision paid off, as he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal.

His second notable part was in the 1999 film “Just the Ticket,” in which he played Gary Starke. In 2001, he portrayed Terry Benedict, an arrogant Las Vegas casino tycoon, in the adaptation of the 1960 caper film “Ocean’s Eleven.”

Andy reprised his role in “Ocean’s Twelve” in 2004 and “Ocean’s Thirteen” in 2007. Andy earned the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role in “Ocean’s Eleven” in 2002.

Andy’s professional year was a big one for him, as he starred in four films. In “Mamma Mia!,” he played Fernando Cienfuegos. Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, Stellan Skarsgaard, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Cher co-starred in “Here We Go Again,” which was a box office and critical hit.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film garnered an 81 percent approval rating; one critic wrote, “Mamma Mia!” Here We Go Again expands on almost everything that fans loved about the first film — and how can fans say no? ‘It was sublime,’ Andy said in an interview with NBC’s Today show about his experience singing with Cher. It’s one thing to work with Cher, a fantastic actress, and then be asked to sing alongside her.’
