Marla Runyan competed in the 1992 Summer Paralympics and won four gold medals in the long jump, 100, 200, and 400 meters. She finished 10th in the Heptathlon at the 1996 US Olympic Trials, attempting to qualify for the Able-Body Olympics. Runyan set an American record in the heptathlon-800 m with a time of 2:04.60. This athlete won silver in the shot throw and gold in the pentathlon at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta.

She won gold in the 1,500-meter run and was second in the United States in the 1999 Pan American Games. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Runyan placed eighth in the 1,500-meter race, becoming the first legally blind athlete to compete and the highest finish by an American woman in that event.
