With the Austrian Football Association team LASK Linz in his hometown of Linz, Kovacic started playing football at a young age. In 2007, Kovacic caught the eye of scouts from various prestigious European teams at the age of 13. However, he decided to sign on with Croatian serial champion Dinamo Zagreb on the advise of his parents.
