However he attended California State University, Fullerton and played collegiate baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans after going undrafted out of high school in the 2011 MLB draft. Chapman signed a contract and joined the rookie-level Arizona League Athletics, where he made his professional debut. After three games, he was sent up to the Class-A Beloit Snappers. He batted for Beloit in 50 games. 237 with 20 RBIs and five home homers.

In 2016, the Athletics welcomed Chapman to their major league spring training camp. He started the season with Midland and was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds in August after slashing.244/.335/.521 with 29 home runs and 83 RBIs in 117 games with Midland. Against the New York Yankees on June 16, Chapman notched his first major league hit and three RBIs (including the winning run). Chapman was dismissed from a game on September 6 by umpire Mike Everitt after a dispute with Los Angeles Angels catcher Juan Graterol.

Chapman had a 2020 batting line of.232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs, and 54 strikeouts in 142 at-bats. Due to hip tendinitis, he last played on September 6. That month, he underwent labrum surgery, terminating his season.
