He also starred in Israel Horovitz’s The Indian Wants The Box in 1968. For “Dirty Jokes,” he was nominated Best a Joseph Jefferson Award in 1976 for Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play. Career

On Broadway at the Shubert Theatre in 1966, Cowles played the title role in Edward Albee’s short-lived version of James Purdy’s comedic novel Malcolm.  He co-starred in Israel Horovitz’s The Indian Wants the Bronx starring Al Pacino and John Cazale in 1968. Cowles performed in Paradise Lost, Rain, Inheritors, and The Hasty Heart for The Mirror Theater Ltd’s Mirror Repertory Company’s first repertory season in 1983.

Joe Czernak in the series NYPD was Cowles’ debut television role, which he played in 1969. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 1978 for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series and again in 1981 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series for his performance as Billy Clyde Tuggle in All My Children, which he originated and scripted.

Cowles’ first film, Me, Natalie (1969), was a comedic drama in which he starred as Harvey Belman. In this film, Al Pacino made his film debut. Cowles was in Martin Scorsese’s film Shutter Island as a minor character in 2010. Cowles also starred in three short plays for Playing on Air, a public radio program and podcast.
